The Fast Diet

The  Fast Diet by Dr Michael Mosley & Mimi Spencer

Is this just another diet book? Actually no its not, this is finally the book that can at long last find us as a nation getting healthier, and lighter. The title really says it all - "Lose Weight, Stay Healthy, Live Longer" and it does exactly what it says on the tin and there are many testimonials to back it up.

Why does this diet book make sense?  When the author Dr Michael Mosley whom is a medical journalist with the BBC first alerted us to this book, he did so only after presenting us with some amazing and scientific facts. As a 55yr old guy who was getting to the age when being overweight was causing other problems and could lead to an onset of diabetes he decided to see if all the scientific facts of dieting added up. Discovering that he did you can read how and why fasting in the way he describes really does work. The best bit about this is that for the rest of the week you can eat and drink normally and you will still lose weight. Is it too good to be true?..... Well according to one of the many testimonials I think not...

A busy mum with 3 children writes " This diet fits beautifully round my social life, as the fast days are so flexible. Its not that hard to resist temptation for one day because I know the next day I can have donut or a curry and a few glasses of wine if I want  and without feeling guilty. The proof is, literally, in the pudding, I have been eating like this but sticking to my 500 cals on a fast days I am still losing the weight"

Tzatziki

Greek Yogurt and Cucumber Sauce also known as Tzatziki

Having just come back from a holiday in Corfu, I fell in love with the Tzatziki. This of course varies slightly as some people prefer to use dill instead of mint, however I loved the freshness of this particular recipe Its easy to do, however to make it just right you do need to allow plenty of time for the  preparation.

Ingredients

Greek Yoghurt either normal or low fat
1x Lemon
1x cucumber
garlic clove x 2
fresh mint - few pieces
sea salt

Directions

Sieve the yoghurt for 2 hours. I used doubled up kitchen roll over a jug securing with an elastic band and poured the yoghurt in it to drain for 2hrs. This is important as this will remove any unwanted water from the yoghurt and ensure your tzatziki is the right consistency.

At the same time I also peeled and de-seeded the cucumber. Then I chopped into pieces added to a sieve and sprinkled sea salt on and also left to drain over a bowl for same amount of time.

Add  cucumber, galic, salt and pepper and sprigs of mint to a blender and mix well. Add the blended mixture to the strained yoghurt and stir well. Put in fridge and leave for another 2 hours so that all the flavour blends.

Serve with crusty bread or crackers for a really healthy snack any-time day or night.
